Kernpunkte

Human triggered avalanches remain possible today. Warming temperatures could also make avalanches  easier to trigger this afternoon with temperatures potentially climbing into the low 30's in the mountains. Weak snow around a crust buried by the latest storm has the potential to produce an avalanche cpable of burying a person. Evaluate the snow for signs of wind effect along ridges and dig to look for the crust/facet layer before committing to steep slopes, especially ones that may contain a thinner snowpack.

    Winds have shifted around the compass with the passage of the parade of shortwaves through the Tetons. Cornices have calved off and grown again and even one wind slab avalanche occurred as temps warmed  yesterday on a butte at the entrance to the Elk Refuge. Look for signs of wind effect like drifts, large cornices or firmer surfaces. This avalanche problem should be easy enough to see and avoid but remember that wind loaded areas may also be stressing a weak layer of facets buried Feb 18.  Cornices have grown in recent weeks and may weaken as temperatures warm so keep an eye on this hazard. 

    (3/1/2023) No tracks were visible from the road on this cross-loaded slope that failed during the day on March 1. This avalanche was pretty harmless due to the  short vertical fall which wouldn't be the case on some other slopes.

    The primary concerning layer at this point is the layer of facets adjacent to a crust buried on February 18. A number of natural and human-triggered avalanches have occurred on this layer during and since the storm Feb 18-21. Since the storm,  snow has settled and created a slab that shows signs of instability in test pits along with worrisome collapses (read this observation for more). These signs are centered primarily in areas where the melt-freeze crust and facet combination is most developed. Where those layers are less pronounced, stability is improving. Due south locations at low elevations are lacking much snow  though neighboring slopes may contain wind drifts on top of these layers. You can expect slabs one to two feet thick on top of this weak layer, certainly deep enough bury a person in some locations.
