    Recent rain-on-snow and continued warming have created a widespread wet snow avalanche problem for Tuesday. Loose wet, wet slab, and glide avalanches are all on the table for slopes that received rain. Activity may be triggered underfoot, from snow shedding off of trees or rocks, or even unexpectedly. While wet slab avalanches are not necessarily expected for Tuesday, the ingredients are starting to show, and these avalanches are notoriously difficult to anticipate.

    Use visual clues such as rain runnels, surface dimpling, fresh roller balls, and natural avalanche activity as indicators of an existing wet snow instability. The safest strategy is proper terrain choice: avoid steep slopes with heavy, wet surface snow, limit time spent beneath big slopes, and avoid steep, rocky terrain where glide avalanches could release to the ground without warning.

Avalanche Discussion

Snoqualmie Pass picked up rain through much of the day on Monday, resulting in numerous natural wet avalanches as well as overall snow loss. Across the forecast region, most weather stations have reported between 6 and 12 inches of snow settlement. Alpental Pro Patrol reported a large glide avalanche off of steep, rocky terrain, and an observer around Alpental Valley noticed a fresh glide at the bottom of Bryant Peak couloir. A couple long-running wet loose avalanches triggered by shedding snow were also noted. Similar soggy conditions were found around Microwave Hill, where water has percolated over 12 inches deep into the snow. 

Though rain will taper off Monday evening, wet snow avalanches will continue to be a concern into Tuesday. Temperatures will climb as the snow adjusts to the recent influx of water. In times of warm-up and rain, wet avalanches are tricky to forecast. It's hard to say how the snow will react in the next 24 hours. Multiple crusts exist in the snowpack that could act as a sliding surface for wet slabs, if they should even occur. As skies begin to clear, stepping into larger terrain may be tempting, but remember the snowpack is in a transitional phase and may react differently than expected.
