The avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE up high with a strong MODERATE danger in the mid-elevations. You can trigger soft slabs of new or wind drifted snow in steep terrain today and caution is advised. Note than any new snow avalanche may step down into older weak snow on the north side of the compass.

Note: grey areas do not have enough snow to pose a problem.

You'll be able to trigger new soft slabs of wind drifted snow in the mid and upper elevations this morning. These drifts will be up to 2' thick and most pronounced on north to east to south facing slopes, but drifts may be scattered around the compass. (some anemometers in the mid-elevations are showing swirling winds from the east this morning). Shooting cracks are dead giveaways to instability and test slopes should give good clues to localized conditions.

New snow instabilities are most sensitive during and just after high snowfall intensity. Look for the new snow to move with provocation on all aspects this morning. Again, test slopes will be good indication of localized conditions.

Any avalanche in the storm snow may be able to step down into the older weak sugary faceted snow from January. These older weak layers exist on the north side of the compass and most suspect in the mid and upper elevations. While it's true that "likelihood" has slowly diminished, uncertainty has increased over time: when, where, and how will these monsters be triggered?

Recent Activity

We received no reports from the backcountry in the Ogden mountains. If you're heading north into the Logan area mountains, check their forecast - riders triggered very large avalanches in that zone over the weekend.

Snow and Weather

Providence has delivered.

We've received 6-12" overnight (up to 1.30" snow-water-equivalent) with slightly preferential snowfall favoring the Powder and Monte Cristo terrain. Temperatures are in the mid to upper 20s; winds are 15-20mph with gusts to 30. We'll seen another inch or two before things wind down. I wouldn't be surprised to see some clearing by late morning to midday. Temps will be in the mid to upper 20s; winds *should* diminish but weather models tend to under-play winds from the northeast. Wednesday should be beautiful ahead of another powerhouse storm late Wednesday through early Saturday. Early projections are perhaps 8-16" of The Greatest Snow on Earth.
