Kernpunkte

Numerous large avalanches were triggered yesterday, primarily above 9,500’ on north through east aspects where dangerous avalanche conditions are possible today. Give the snowpack on wind-loaded terrain more time to heal after the rapid load of snow following a long, dry period of weather. Warmer temperatures and clearer skies today will also increase the chance of triggering avalanches on slopes facing the sun by the afternoon.

We will issue our last daily Avalanche Forecast of the season in this zone on Friday, April 10th. We will issue General Avalanche Information Bulletins as needed through April or early May.

    Triggering soft slab avalanches 1-3 feet deep on steep terrain will remain possible today. Check out the D2 avalanches triggered yesterday to understand where the snowpack is unstable. These avalanches were failing on wind-loaded upper elevation terrain with a poor bonding interface. Due to this interface, avalanches are capable of breaking wide cross-slope. These slabs may be more stubborn today and produce less obvious signs of instability such as shooting cracks. Continue to use caution as the snowpack settles with warmer temperatures that could increase reactivity in the afternoon.

    The large avalanche in the Ski Lake area resulted in a burial with serious injuries and SAR evac after triggering a slab up to 3 feet deep.

    Warming temperatures, clear skies, and light/variable wind will increase the chance of wet loose avalanches on W-S-E aspects above 8,000’. The recent cold snow did not experience a significant wet avalanche cycle yesterday and could do so today. Move to more shaded terrain or exit the mountains if the snow becomes mushy, unsupportable, and unstable. Remember that these avalanches can start small and entrain large amounts of snow on steep, sustained slopes. They are also more likely around rock features that heat surrounding snow surfaces.

April Shower Bring...

On Thursday evening, 12-16 inches of snow with over an inch of snow water equivalent fell rapidly. Over 2 feet of snow has fallen in the last week. Strong NW/W wind accompanied the last pulse forming reactive wind slabs. Yesterday was the first day of full sun that likely contributed to influencing the slab character of the recent snow. Combine this with a productive crust bed surface and avalanches were easy to trigger and capable of propagating far cross-slope. This crust, or poor bonding interface, was formed during a warm, dry period in March and has shown to be more reactive on N-E aspects above 9,500’. There’s evidence that some of the avalanches could have also failed on mid-storm density changes including graupel. Give this terrain a wide safety margin and assess the snowpack/terrain thoroughly. Look for signs of previous wind loading including drifts, stiff slabs, or textured snow surfaces. 

We have removed the lower elevations from the forecast due to insufficient snow coverage below 7,500’. As five-scale avalanche forecasts wind down this week, we will continue to remain operational by providing General Avalanche Information Bulletins through April or early May depending on conditions and weather. We will also update the 24 Hour Data Summary (Big Sheet) until June 1st.
