Moderate danger at all elevations. After 72 hours of strong Northerly winds, wind slabs linger on Southerly aspects below ridgelines and may remain reactive in isolated areas despite decreasing winds. Following a large avalanche cycle earlier this week on the 3/6 melt-freeze crust, little activity has been observed since; however, warming temperatures and solar input could increase the likelihood of triggering a persistent slab on recently loaded slopes. Use caution in steep, open terrain and watch for signs of instability such as cracking or hollow snow. It is important to ski, ride and sled slopes one at a time keeping eyes on partners while they are on slope.

    Blowing snow and active wind transport have been occurring for over 72 hours, loading predominatley southerly aspects. Winds decreased throughout the day yesterday but picked back up again overnight. As winds continue to diminish into tonight, these wind slabs are expected to gradually become less reactive. However, they may still be sensitive in the near term. Be on the lookout for smooth, pillowy areas of loaded snow near ridgelines, as well as classic signs of instability such as shooting cracks and hollow, drum-like sounds underfoot.

    With solar radiation, expect sun-exposed slopes to produce wet loose avalanches. There is potential for these to step down to the 3/6 melt-freeze crust.

    An avalanche cycle on 3/22 and 3/23 occurred on the 3/6 melt-freeze crust, approximately 85 cm below the surface. These slides were all reported on North-West aspects. However, with recent Northerly winds now loading Southerly aspects, there is potential for reactivity on all aspects. We have not seen activity on this layer since 3/23.

Avalanche Discussion

The past 72+ hours have been dominated by moderate to strong Northerly winds, transporting snow onto Southerly aspects and forming fresh, reactive wind slabs. As winds are expected to decrease throughout the day, these slabs will likely become more stubborn, though they may still be sensitive in isolated areas.

Sastrugi and inverted tracks were observed yesterday, indicating that there is significantly less snow available for transport after several days of sustained wind stripping slopes.

We continue to monitor the reactivity of the 3/6 melt-freeze crust, approximately 85 cm below the surface. An active avalanche cycle on March 22–23 produced multiple D2+ avalanches failing on this layer, primarily on North to West aspects. With recent snow redistribution onto more Southerly aspects, combined with increasing solar radiation, there is potential for avalanche activity to develop on Southerly aspects as well.

Persistent slabs are notoriously difficult to predict. Often referred to as the “sleeping dragon,” they can remain dormant for extended periods and may be triggered from isolated thin spots, sometimes with little or no warning. This makes stability feedback unreliable and can create a false sense of security. Careful terrain assessment and heightened awareness are essential.

Today, temperatures are expected to rise, with a high near 22°F. Expect light northeast winds and a chance of snow flurries during the day, transitioning to snow showers this evening.
