Expect another calm, clear day on Mt Hood. You may be able to trigger small wet loose avalanches on steep sunny slopes at upper elevations. Monitor snow surfaces as they thaw throughout the day, and move to shady or lower angle terrain if you find weak slushy snow.

    There may be a few low-lying clouds and valley fog early,  but the sun will be out in full force by mid-morning with clear skies through the rest of the day. Following prolonged heavy rains from 2/26-3/1, a slight cooling trend on 3/2 allowed 3-5in of snow to accumulate above 5500ft. As the sunshine thaws this recent surface snow again on E-S-W aspects, there is a chance for additional wet loose avalanches. Be on the lookout for fresh rollerballs and pinwheels, especially around steep rocky outcrops in direct sun. Keep your return routes in mind as well - slopes you crossed early in the day could become wet and weak by afternoon. Terrain traps such as valley bottoms, cliffs, or recently exposed talus will all increase the risk of even a small avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

Skies cleared Thursday for the first time since the atmospheric river began on 2/26. Observers were able to view the freshly coated upper mountain and some very large wet debris piles in Clark Canyon and White River. But, with dry conditions and cooling temperatures, it was a quiet day avalanche-wise. Continued very large avalanches are unlikely as the snowpack has refrozen and gained strength. The recent snow from Wednesday refreshed wet and sloppy snow surfaces from the rains and made for smooth turns in some areas. On-snow observations from the upper mountain are limited, so use caution if you venture high. Areas above 8000ft stayed out of the recent rain and received several feet of snow over the past 5 days. In isolated upper elevation areas, there may still be unstable slabs of wind drifted snow, so look and feel for changes in snow surface texture and hardness before committing to consequential terrain.
