Kernpunkte

A continuation of stormy weather means that there won't be much change in avalanche conditions from Sunday as we head into Monday.  New snow and significant wind speeds from the South and Southwest mean that we can continue to expect Wind Slab avalanches on North and East slopes at treeline and above treeline.  Similarly cornices have been building rapidly and may be particularly sensitive.

On Sunday observed wind speeds at treeline were Strong to Extreme.  Wind transport of the recent and current snow was widespread.  These weather factors will continue throughout Monday, and so will the Wind Slab problem.

I'm not sure that the riding will be pleasant up high on these more dangerous slopes, but if you are venturing onto lee slopes at or above treeline, assess the Wind Slab problem on slopes that are less than 30 degrees, or on slopes too small to injure a rider.

Cornices have been growing rapidly with continued snowfall and Strong wind.  Cornices are always unpredictable, but I give them some extra room under these circumstaces.  In stormy weather the hazard of Cornice Failure can be exacerbated by limited visibility.

Avalanche Discussion

It has been stormy.  During the last couple of days we haven't seen enough snow to create significant avalanche hazard below treeline, but there have been observations of Wind Slab avalanches each day.  This weather will continue through Monday.  With no perisistent weak layers of concern in our snowpack, our attention has been focused on the Wind Slab and Cornice problems.
