Seek out soft, wind protected snow for the safest and highest quality riding conditions.  Although they are rare, old wind slab concerns linger on previously drifted leeward terrain features at high elevations from last week's west to northwest winds.

    Wind transport late last week formed pockets of hard drifts scattered across some leeward terrain features.   Although they are relatively thin and becoming more difficult to trigger now, they are easily stiff enough to break above you or catch you by surprise.  You are most likely to encounter a lingering wind slab above treeline on northeast, east, and southeast aspects.   Look for stiff and smooth drifts below ridgelines and cornices or in cross loaded gullies to identify lingering features of concern. 

Avalanche Discussion

With wind transport coming to a halt over the weekend, we're seeing a gradual decrease in the sensitivity of wind slab issues that formed late last week.  Change is slow because the slabs that formed were dense and hard over faceted weak layers.  Fieldwork over the past few days suggests that the problem is fairly isolated across the terrain, and that the problem is becoming more stubborn. That means the problem only exists in a few locations and that it's becoming difficult to trigger.  Today, we're lowering the likelihood and danger rating to match that trend.  There are still features of concern that are worth avoiding in favor of softer and safer riding conditions. 

These human-triggered and natural avalanches from last week (Example A, Example B, Example C) highlight the type of terrain where you might find lingering trouble.  The slabs are generally hard and range from 6" to 18" thick.  In most terrain, that's a small avalanche that could knock you off your feet and push you into rocks or cliffs.  In leeward terrain loaded by broad, productive fetches or with long, steep relief below, a triggered avalanche might be large enough to bury you.
