Kernpunkte

Avalanche danger will increase throughout the day as warming temperatures and sunshine destabilizes snow by the afternoon on steep slopes facing the sun. Natural and human triggered wet loose avalanches will be more likely around rock features that heat up surrounding snow surfaces. Plan your travels accordingly to seek cooler, shaded terrain before slopes facing the sun become unstable. Be aware that large avalanches on buried weak layers linger in very steep complex terrain.

    Full solar radiation with completely clear skies and temperatures above freezing across all elevations bands will destabilize recent snow throughout the day. Wet avalanches will be possible by the afternoon as east facing slopes warm first followed by south then west. Small D1 avalanches will be likely while larger D2 will be possible if large amounts of snow push into terrain features or traps. Look for signs of natural wet loose, rollerballs, or pinwheels with snow surfaces transitioning to wet or moist as clear indications of increasing avalanche danger. 

    Cornice/Rock Falls: As temperatures increase be aware of the potential for natural cornices and rock falls. Limit exposure below large cornices and remember that cornices can break further back than expected on ridgelines.

    Weak layers buried 2-3 feet by hard slabs remain a lingering concern on isolated terrain features. Wind loaded terrain could contain slabs up to 4+ feet deep. Although unlikely, these large avalanches could occur on wind affected slopes where the overlying slab is thin and easier to impact the weak layer capable of traveling far across or upslope. Very steep, unsupported, and convex slopes should be assessed thoroughly before riding. Signs of instability such as recent avalanches or collapsing will not be present before triggering a large avalanche. Multiple tracks on a slope do not indicate that the slope is stable. 

    Be aware that larger triggers such as cornices or rock falls increase the potential of triggering a very large persistent slab avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

A full cycle of wet loose avalanches from clear skies and warm temperatures was not reported yesterday. This means there are plenty of slopes facing the sun still ripe for wet loose avalanches with slightly warmer temperatures today. Managing this problem can be easy if you choose terrain where you don’t have to travel across steep southerly slopes with heightened avalanche potential by the afternoon. Assess the snow surfaces throughout your travels as dry snow will destabilize quicker than areas that developed a crust yesterday and last night. Small wind slabs less than 8 inches deep could be found in isolated areas from increased northwest wind last night. Areas in the alpine where you encounter dry snow will be impacted the most significantly.
