Dangerous avalanche conditions exist as recent snow and strong wind has formed dense slabs 2-3 feet deep. Signs of instability may not be present before triggering a large avalanche that is capable of traveling far cross-slope or above you. Continued warming temperatures will further destabilize the snow. Seek less consequential terrain and avoid runout zones while the snowpack adjusts to the rapid loading and warming over the last four days.

    Rain on snow over the last 48 hours has destabilized the snowpack in the lower elevations. Temperatures have remained above freezing overnight and will continue today and creep up into the middle and upper elevations. Triggering wet loose avalanches large enough to bury a person is likely on terrain over 35° steep and below 8500’. Finding wet snow or sinking above your boot are clear signs of unstable conditions. Be aware that these avalanches can start small, but entrain larger amounts of snow on sizable slopes or smaller features like couloirs, creeks, or gullies.

    Weak snow near the base of the snowpack lurks 3-6 feet below the surface. Rapid loading from the recent storm snow is stressing these weak layers in locations that contain a shallower snowpack such as the Wyoming Range. Avalanches involving these layers could occur with a significant trigger such as a large wind slab avalanche. Keep these layers on your radar if traveling in shallow parts of the forecast zone.

    Heavy snowfall combined with strong southwest wind over the last 4 days has formed dense slabs 2-3 feet deep that lie above weak interfaces. Human triggered avalanches are likely in steep terrain over 35°. Due to the wide distribution and continuity of the weak layer and slab, avalanches are capable of traveling far distances across or upslope above you if triggered. Continued warm temperatures last night and today will increase the likelihood of triggering. Managing this problem will be difficult as signs of instability such as collapsing, cracking, or recent avalanches in the last 48 hours may not be present. Many slopes may appear stable until larger triggers or hitting the thin spot produces large avalanches. Choose conservative and lower angle terrain to manage the dangerous high consequence avalanche conditions. 

    Yesterday a group of 7 triggered a large avalanche resulting in a partial burial in the adjacent Teton zone outside of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. More details can be found here

    A large skier triggered avalanche on a NE facing slope at 9,400' south of JHMR. It likely failed on the new/old interface that was buried on 1/31. 7 skiers were caught and carried. All members of the party survived the incident.

Less Obvious, But Still Dangerous

The snowpack has gone through a lot of rapid change since Jan 31st causing unstable snow in the top portion of the snowpack. Prior to the recent storms, dry conditions formed widespread weak layers of facets across most aspects and elevations. These weak layers are now buried by dense slabs and capable of producing destructive avalanches. Over 3” of snow water equivalent (weight of the snow) has fallen on a weak interface that will not bond to the new snow. Continued warming temperatures last night and today will increase the likelihood of triggering large dry or wet snow avalanches depending on the elevation. Stack the odds in your favor and don’t let the false sense of security of the current avalanche conditions cloud your judgement. There’s plenty of fresh untracked snow in simpler and lower angle terrain.
