Avalanches will become larger and more sensitive throughout the day, especially near or above treeline. The highest risk will be in leeward areas near ridgelines, alpine couloirs, and cross-loaded depressions. Pay close attention to new snow accumulation, as it will increase the avalanche hazard as the day progresses.

    Today, the focus is on new wind slab development near and above treeline. Conditions will worsen as new snow accumulates in the afternoon. Keep a close watch on snow totals and plan for changing conditions. Look for signs like blowing snow, textured surfaces, fresh drifts, and hollow snow, which indicate unstable slabs. Be cautious around terrain features that promote drifting, such as the leeward side of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, mid-slope convex rollovers, and cross-loaded depressions. As new snow accumulates, the size and distribution of unstable slabs will increase.

Avalanche Discussion

We continue to track the potential for avalanches breaking within the old snow. We have very limited data, and no reported avalanches in the days since our last loading event. Recent observations noting collapsing in the upper snowpack and long shooting cracks suggest triggering an avalanche within the old snow may be possible where a fresh, dense slab rests on weak faceted snow below.  The distribution of this concerning structure is likely isolated to a narrow area near treeline where old, faceted surface snow was spared the worst impacts of heavy rain.  This setup will most likely be on sheltered northerly aspects above 9500' near the treeline. Keep a sharp eye out for signs of instability, such as recent avalanche activity, shooting cracks in the surface snow, and collapsing in the upper snowpack. If you notice any of these signs, it is wise to give a wide berth to steep and consequential terrain and areas with shallow trigger points, such as cliff bands and rock outcrops.

If you decide to head out today, be ready to contend with changing conditions and difficult travel. A variety of hard crusts exist everywhere, breakable below treeline and more supportable as you gain elevation. In addition, coverage remains thin and riddled with obstacles. Keep in mind that these hard and slick surfaces may make it more difficult to control your speed while navigating thin coverage.
