Kernpunkte

The most dangerous conditions will be at upper elevations, where you can trigger slab avalanches formed by new snow and wind. At middle and lower elevation slopes, you may be able to trigger small wet avalanches. Watch for actively blowing snow to point towards areas of danger, and stick to wind-sheltered terrain to avoid triggering large avalanches.

    You can trigger avalanches in the new and recently fallen snow, especially where fresh wind slabs will form on leeward sides of ridges. Strong southwesterly winds should be actively transporting snow, so the danger will be easy to see. Cracking in the snow and recent avalanches are also red-flag signs of the danger. Use small test slopes to see how easily the snow slides before committing to larger slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Be ready for changing surface conditions as you move through the terrain and climb in elevation.

    Wet snow avalanches might come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes on Monday, ranging anywhere from small wet loose slides to larger cornice falls and glide avalanches. It's more likely you will encounter these smaller loose snow avalanches, but be prepared for the big ones.

    Don't step out onto a slope that has a glide crack on it. Minimize your exposure under large, overhung cornices, cliffs holding cornice-like chunks of snow, or other unstable snow features. Ideally, pick a route that avoids crossing under these features. If you must, travel quickly under them, and only stop in locations free of overhead hazards. If you're heading into upper-elevation alpine terrain, use extra caution around craggy features and corniced ridges.

There is a high degree of uncertainty in this forecast. The weather forecast is complex, and observations are limited in the zone.

Up to 7 inches of snow could fall near the Cascade crest at upper elevations by Tuesday afternoon. At middle and low elevations, this storm will be a mix of rain and moist snow. Precipitation started as rain on Sunday, snow levels dropped on Monday, but will once again rise on Tuesday. The wind will form deeper drifts at upper elevations. 

Observers have gotten to some further-flung destinations in the past week, including Beverly Creek, The Enchantments, and the Trinity area. Observers reported natural wet avalanches over the weekend and during hot sunny weather last week.
