Larger triggers such as groups or snowmobiles will increase the likelihood of triggering. Warming temperatures combined with periods of sunshine will make wet loose activity possible as the day progresses. Pay attention to snow surfaces as warming occurs. Move off of steep terrain as it becomes easier to penetrate the surface snow and plan exit routes accordingly. Below 8,000 feet the avalanche danger is Low, where avalanches are unlikely except for isolated pockets of shallow wet loose avalanches in very steep terrain.

    New snow amounts over the last 48 hours vary by location, ranging between 2-8”. Winds have been moderate to strong and out of the southwest. Yesterday there were reports of several avalanches intentionally triggered in Grand Teton National Park between 8,500-10,000 feet in very steep terrain. These avalanches were a foot in depth and large enough to injure or bury a person. While activity will not be widespread, it will be important to assess the snowpack for signs of wind loading prior to entering into committing terrain. Smooth, rounded, stiff and hollow snow surfaces are indicators that recent wind loading has occurred.

    Warm temperatures will allow for the possibility of wet loose avalanches in very steep terrain. Volume is expected to be relatively shallow, but large enough to knock a person over or a snowmobile off track. During periods of clear skies expect the strong April sun to impact snow surfaces quickly and increase the likelihood of triggering.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Overnight lows will be in the low twenties between 8,000-9,000 feet. Daytime highs will rise into the low to mid forties at this elevation band. Cloud cover will be on the decline overnight, with partly cloudy skies expected tomorrow. Winds will back from the west to southwest overnight, with average speeds in the 15-20 mph range at ridgetops.The avalanche danger will be Moderate tomorrow with wind slab and wet loose avalanches being the main snowpack issues to be aware of. With rising temperatures and the strong effects of the springtime sun, expect avalanche danger to increase during the day. Lingering wind slabs that have formed over the last week will be possible to trigger in steep upper elevation terrain. Larger triggers such as groups and snowmobiles may be required to trigger slab avalanches. The one-two combo of sun and warm air temperatures will make triggering more likely. Wet loose avalanche activity will also be possible in very steep sunlit terrain at all elevations. The likelihood of triggering wet avalanches will also be on the rise as the day progresses.
