Avalanche Activity

Moist and wet avalanches are the main danger.

In some localities 2 to 5 cm of snow fell in the past few hours above approximately 2500 m. Today the weather will be cloudy. Above approximately 2500 m: Some snow will fall today in some localities. These weather conditions from the early morning will give rise to moistening of the snowpack in all aspects between approximately 2100 and 2700 m. As the penetration by moisture increases moist snow slides and avalanches are possible, but they can reach medium size in isolated cases. This applies especially on steep slopes at high altitude, and on very steep west, north and east facing slopes at low and intermediate altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of mild temperatures the snowpack consolidated during the last few days. An overcast night: The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust only at high altitudes. Low and intermediate altitudes: The surface of the snowpack is hardly frozen at all. The rain will give rise as the day progresses to rapid moistening of the snowpack above approximately 2600 m. Below approximately 2400 m only a little snow is lying on south facing slopes.
