Avalanche Activity

In some localities up to 50 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall. In the course of the day danger level 4 (high) will be reached above approximately 1800 m.

As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes strong wind, large surface-area wind slabs will form in all aspects. As a consequence of the new snow the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. The new snow will be deposited on a weakly bonded old snowpack. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on wind-loaded slopes of all aspects above approximately 1800 m and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Weak layers in the old snowpack are treacherous. In some places the avalanches can be triggered in deep layers of the snowpack and reach large size. Especially on very steep shady slopes occasionally large avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities up to 50 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall on Thursday above approximately 1600 m. The new snow will be deposited on a weakly bonded old snowpack. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes strong southerly wind, avalanche prone wind slabs will form in all aspects. Field observations and weak layers in the old snowpack indicate poor snowpack stability in particular in the regions exposed to substantial precipitation.
