Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised accumulations of unstable windslab will develop on North to Easterly aspects above 900 metres. Areas most affected will be around corrie rims and gully tops. Wet snow instabilities will persist on steep North-West to North-East aspects above 950 metres; however, as it turns cooler from early morning onwards stability will gradually improve. Unstable cornices will overhang some of these aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: As it turns cooler during the night some snowfall is expected above 800 to 900 metres, this will clear to leave a dry day. Gale force South-West winds will gradually ease during the day and veer to become fresh North-Westerly by the afternoon. The freezing level will gradually fall from summit levels to 800 metres during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Gale force South-South-East winds with light precipitation falling as snow above 1100 metres. It was freezing at around summit levels. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack continues to thaw at all but the highest altitudes. Instabilities persist on steep North-West to North-East aspects above 950 metres. Large unstable cornices overhang some of these aspects. Avalanche activity and cornice collapse were observed on North-Westerly facing slopes above 1000 metres. Elsewhere the snowpack is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
