You can trigger an avalanche in drifted snow at upper elevations. Strong winds and new snow created slabs that rest on a weak surface. You should look for and avoid hollow-sounding snow that supports your weight and smooth, rounded pillows of snow that crack underneath you. Recent avalanche activity is an obvious sign that the snow is unstable. If you notice any of these signs of unstable snow, seek wind-sheltered slopes or slopes less than about 30 degrees without steep slopes above them as a safer travel option.
