You can trigger avalanches that break in wind-drifted snow on most steep slopes, especially easterly-facing slopes. Recent winds drifted snow onto a variety of slopes. Look for drifted snow lower in the terrain than you may be used to seeing. There may be drifted snow on open slopes at low elevations. You can reduce your chances of being caught in an avalanche by avoiding the lee sides of ridgelines. A smooth, rounded, often wave-like surface appearance indicates where winds drifted the snow.
