Slopes with drifted snow are the most problematic spots right now. Recent north, south, and now westerly winds have drifted snow onto many slopes near and above the treeline. Avalanches starting in the drifted snow could break into weaker, faceted snow two to three feet deep on slopes facing west through north to the east. These avalanches have the potential to break widely. Look for clues like rounded snow, scalloped surface, and small cornices to help identify where the snow drifted. Move to lower-angled or wind-sheltered slopes if you see cracking or hear collapses.
