If you travel to mid and upper elevations, keep your eyes peeled for pockets of wind-loaded snow. Small drifts and textured snow surfaces can help you locate potentially wind-affected areas. Use cautions in very steep and rocky features where these shallow slabs could catch you off guard.

    Moderate winds and few inches of new snow may combine to form shallow wind slabs on the lee sides of exposed features. As you ascend in the terrain watch for signs that the wind transported snow. When you see a textured snow surface or find small drifts, anticipate wind loaded pockets. You are most likely to trigger a wind slab near the base of cliffs, on rocky slopes, or in confined features. While these thin slabs should only result in small avalanches, they can still harm you in higher consequence terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Upper elevations around the Pass could receive 4 inches or more of snow by Monday morning with lower amounts at Pass level. This new snow will fall with a strong cooling trend that should limit slab development and avalanche hazard outside of wind-affected areas. We anticipate any avalanche issues to stay within the new snow. On southerly aspects, the new snow will collect on a very firm crust formed over last week’s warm sunny weather. In shaded terrain, the snow will accumulate over dry settled powder. Below these surficial differences, the upper snowpack remains dry and “winter-like.” You can still identify many of the recent storms and crusts. 

The Pass could see some sun breaks by Monday afternoon, though this is uncertain. If the sun comes out, you will likely see piles of rollerballs and even a few small loose wet avalanches on very steep slopes. Don’t get surprised by this easy to anticipate issue. If you start to notice the sun, odds are, so does the snowpack. With the new snow sitting on a crust, some of these small loose slides could run far and fast. 

Given the recent weather expect variable travel conditions. You may encounter firm slopes, punchy wet snow, breakable crust, and soft powder as you travel. Give your self extra time to manage these potentially challenging conditions. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
