Yesterday, a skier triggered a slab avalanche two feet in depth on West Angle Mountain. Above 8,000 feet, skiers and riders could trigger similar slab avalanches today. Newly loaded snow from a storm that ended on January 5 increased the avalanche hazard and caused many small to large natural avalanches during the storm. Although wind slabs may be present on leeward slopes, the main concern remains the persistent weak layers. Below 8,000 feet, avalanche activity is unlikely except for small isolated pockets on steep terrain. Cautious route-finding and conservative decision-making are essential for safe backcountry travel.

    Poor snowpack structure exists below the most recent snow and could result in slab avalanches one to two feet in depth on steep avalanche-prone terrain above 8,000 feet. Yesterday, there were reports of recent avalanche activity that failed on crusts, basal facets, and buried surface hoar. It is important to check the snowpack structure for these buried persistent layers and when a slab is present, choose conservative terrain.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A transitory ridge of high pressure will exit the region tonight, and a weather disturbance will increase cloud cover with light snowfall expected by the morning. Accumulation amounts are expected to be one to three inches. Mountain temperatures will start in the mid-teens and then warm into the upper teens to twenties. Ridgetop winds at 10 to 20 miles per hour will veer to the west. Dangerous avalanche conditions, involving snow from a recent storm as well as deeper weak layers, exist across the forecast region. Skiers and riders could trigger small to large wind slab avalanches above 8,500 feet and persistent slab avalanches with slab depths three to five feet at the upper elevations. In the Teton and Grey’s River forecast areas, the avalanche hazard above 7,500 feet is expected to be Considerable, and on Togwotee Pass above 8,000 feet, the avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate.
