Kernpunkte

Aside from a few small pockets of soft slab, no significant natural avalanche activity has been reported that occurred during the end of the recent storm cycle. At the mid and upper elevations, skiers and riders still have some potential to trigger large to very large, recently developed wind slabs in very steep, leeward terrain. At the lower elevations, backcountry travelers might be able to trigger small, isolated pockets of wind slab on very steep isolated terrain features that have been recently wind loaded. If skies become mostly sunny as the day progresses, these slabs may become more susceptible to failure on sunlit aspects lower down, and the chance for shallow wet slides could also develop on low elevation, sunlit slopes.

Settlement rates continue to decrease with most weather stations showing between two and four inches of settlement in the last 24 hours. With no significant faceted weak layers in the upper portion of the snowpack, the recently developed wind slabs are in the process of stabilizing. On very steep, wind loaded slopes above 7,500 feet, human triggered wind slabs ranging in depth from one to four feet remain possible.

Avalanche Discussion

Lingering light snow showers will continue to taper off this evening. Skies will be mostly clear to clear tonight allowing for significant cooling. By sunrise, temperatures are to be below zero at all elevations. During the day, mostly sunny skies will allow temps to quickly rise into the upper teens in the mountains, and into the upper twenties at the lower elevations. Northerly winds will back to the west during the day with ten to fifteen mile per hour averages. During the afternoon, clouds are to increase and the chance for occasional light snow showers is to develop. The general avalanche hazard will be Moderate above 7500 feet and low below that elevation. Recently formed wind slabs with depths to three feet could still be triggered by backcountry travelers. In the Southwest and Togwotee Pass areas, an unlikely chance continues for large triggers such as cornice drops, larger moving surface slabs or snowmobiles to trigger a large deep hard slab if a particularly thin spot on a slope is impacted.
