Avalanche Activity

At elevated altitudes a dangerous avalanche situation will be encountered in some regions.

The more recent wind slabs are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack in particular on north to east to southeast facing aspects above approximately 2000 m. The fresh snow and local mostly small wind slabs represent the main danger. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack and natural avalanches indicate the danger.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow of the weekend is lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on shady slopes above approximately 2000 m. Faceted weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack especially on shady slopes. In all regions at elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
