Avalanche Activity

The avalanche danger will increase quickly during the day.

As a consequence of warming and solar radiation, the avalanche activity will gradually increase. The avalanche prone locations for wet avalanches are to be found at the base of rock walls and on steep slopes. Medium-sized and large natural avalanches are possible also in starting zones where no previous releases have taken place. The wind slabs of the weekend can be released in isolated cases in particular on northwest to north to east facing aspects above approximately 2800 m. This applies even in case of a single winter sport participant in some cases. Backcountry tours should be concluded timely. The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the high Alpine regions, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow of the weekend has settled to a large extent. Fresh wind slabs are mostly easy to recognise and can be released in isolated cases. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be quite good. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise from early morning to a loss of strength within the snowpack. Large-grained weak layers exist in the old snowpack. Avalanches can in isolated cases be triggered in the old snowpack and reach quite a large size. Already many medium-sized and large avalanches have been released in the last two days.
