As a consequence of storm-velocity southerly winds, a new round of heavy precipitation is being registered in the southern regions. The snowfall level lies between 2600 and 2800 m. In the Bernina region, wintery conditions prevailed in high alpine regions even prior to this bout of precipitation as a result of the precipitation from last week. There is already a thin, continuous snowpack in some places in the remaining regions of Switzerland as well: at high alpine altitudes, particularly on shady slopes.

Outlook through Thursday, 26.10.2023

On Tuesday evening, an additional small amount of precipitation is anticipated in the southern regions. The snowfall level is expected to descend down to 2200 to 2400 m. On Wednesday in the southern and the eastern regions, it will be partly sunny during the daytime hours. In the afternoon the next round of precipitation will set in from the west. The precipitation will fall as snow above approximately 2200 m. In the furthermost western part of Lower Valais, approximately 15 to 30 cm of fresh snow is expected, in the other regions only a few centimetres. On Thursday, snowfall is expected over widespread areas above 2200 to 2400 m, most of which will fall in the western and in the northern regions (15 to 30 cm), in the furthermost western part of the Lower Valais as much as 40 cm is anticipated. In the Bernina region, the avalanche danger will slowly decrease, however the conditions in high alpine regions are expected to remain wintery. In the western and the northern regions, the avalanche danger is expected to increase.
