More precipitation and continued strong winds will maintain dangerous avalanche conditions on wind-loaded slopes above 6000 ft. Blowing snow, sharp cornices, and rounded pillows are all signs of unstable slabs lurking nearby. Below the snow line, avoid steep slopes if you notice rollerballs or pinwheels as these are signs that you could trigger wet snow avalanches.

    You’ll find the largest and most destructive wind slabs on east aspects (NE-E-SE) above 6,000 ft. Due to incremental storms and loading, these slabs are growing quite large and will certainly pack a punch if triggered. Fortunately, Mother Nature should give you plenty of signs to help you identify where the problem lurks. You can use visual clues like blowing snow or sharp cornices to help you point out where wind slabs are forming. You’ll typically find these slabs on the downwind side of ridges, below cornices, and beneath rock and cliff bands. You can avoid this problem by sticking to more sheltered slopes or traveling on scoured aspects.

    Below 5500 ft, the main story is wet snow, which will keep wet snow avalanches on the menu for Tuesday. Wet avalanches have likely run their main course in many lower-elevation areas, but middle elevations could be a different story. These elevations have seen fluctuating temperatures, different precipitation types, and up to 8 inches of new snow resting over a crust - so it may be easier for you to initiate one of these wet loose slides at these elevations. Keep an eye out for rollerballs and pinwheels, as these are indicators that larger, wet loose avalanches may soon follow.

Avalanche Discussion

These incremental storms are sneaking up on us above the snow line. On Monday, our friends at the USGS reported a seismic signal indicating a very large avalanche (D3) in the upper White River Canyon. They told us this avalanche occurred somewhere near the top of the Palmer lift (8500 ft) in the upper White River Canyon. This is good evidence pointing out that slabs are growing large and destructive in the alpine despite the drippy conditions below 6000 ft.  NWAC forecasters traveled in the Pea Gravel Ridge area on Monday. They found wet snow extending to around 6000 ft. Above this is where they reported heavy drifting and more dangerous avalanche conditions in the wind-loaded areas. They generally found the 8-10 inches of new snow bonding well to 1/20 crust.
