Trace to no new snow amounts were recorded this morning across the forecast zone as the first of two weak upper troughs pass the area. The stronger of the two is predicted to impact the area after 5pm and with it increased snowfall (1-4”) and strong to extreme winds that will shift from predominantly southwest flow to westerly flow. This wind slab problem is more a pre-emptive “heads up” in case snowfall and winds pick up earlier than expected today. Evaluate for fresh building wind deposits on leeward terrain adjacent to ridgeline, gullies and convex rolls. New snow will be falling on firm and slick old snow surfaces that could make it sensitive to skier trigger. Look for signs of wind transport and wind slab development by identifying areas of blowing snow, cracking or new snow sluffing under your feet.
