This morning, small wet loose avalanches may be possible on steep rocky slopes. As new snow falls this afternoon, watch for small wind slabs developing on the leeward side of ridges and in gullies. Use caution in avalanche terrain if the snow is wet and unsupportable or if fresh drifts start to crack under your weight. 

Sunday, April 14th will be the last daily avalanche forecast of the season.

    Strong southwest winds have minimal new snow available for drifting during daylight hours. Where the most new snow falls, small fresh wind slabs could form over hard crusts by this afternoon. Pay attention to how quickly new snow piles up. Watch for blowing snow and small cornices forming in leeward start zones. Use caution where you find rippled, textured drifts downwind of terrain features that re-direct the wind. Fresh, dense slabs can crack around you below ridgelines, on the sidewalls of couloirs and gullies, and below convexities and cliff bands. Even small wind slab avalanches can have big consequences in steep terrain.

    Temperatures have remained above freezing in many areas. Clear skies and strong ridgetop winds allowed the snow surface to cool and crust over last night. That crust may melt as the sun comes out and temperatures remain above average this morning. Until clouds and southwest winds lock up the surface, wet loose avalanches could still be a problem. Very steep, rocky slopes and areas with thin snow cover will warm first as the sun hits them. Thawing surface crusts that cause you to sink deeply into wet snow are signs of instability. Conditions will vary with aspect and elevation across the forecast area, and they’ll change quickly depending on how soon temperatures drop and new snow starts to fall. Monitor the weather and surface conditions and keep your plan flexible.

Avalanche Discussion

Ch-ch-changes! Conditions change quickly during the spring before or after brief but intense storms. Today is one of those transitional days. After a week of spring melt-freeze cycles, a cold front begins to push through the Sierra today.

Overnight freezes have been brief below about 9500 feet for the past three days. Loose wet avalanche activity peaked on Thursday the 11th, although a few small avalanches ran yesterday. Temperatures will be warm again today, though increasing winds and cloud cover, and new snow, will reduce the threat of wet loose avalanches and make wintry wind slabs a possibility. Active weather and slab avalanche concerns continue through the weekend.
