A layer of weak snow (facets plus or minus crusts) rests uncomfortably beneath 1.5-2.5 foot thick slabs here. This layer produced both human-triggered and natural avalanches as it was loaded during the storm this weekend. These slides were most common in wind-loaded terrain, but enough snow fell in this zone that slides also released on sheltered slopes (photo). Unfortunately, this type of weak snow does not heal quickly and can produce avalanches many days or weeks after loading events. These slides can break wider and much higher above you on the slope than you expect. Importantly, these slides can be triggered a long distance away from the slope that avalanches (known as "remote triggering", video from this weekend here).
Use your hands and feet and ski poles to feel for the presence of older snow underneath the newer snow. If you're having trouble telling, pull out your shovel and dig a quick hole. You'll find a stout crust underneath these facets on middle elevation slopes that face away from the sun and a mix of several weaker crusts and facets as you climb in elevation and wrap around to colder slopes. If you are finding older snow underneath the storm snow from the weekend, these types of avalanches are on the menu. Cracking and collapsing of the snowpack are clear indicators that the slope you are on is unstable. The only surefire way to avoid this problem is to steer clear of steep slopes with old snow underneath the new snow.
