Human-triggered avalanches are trending towards unlikely. Weak layers of snow exist two to three feet below the surface but firm snow above makes triggering this layer difficult. Triggering an avalanche in very steep, wind-effected and rocky terrain, especially during the warmest part of the day, remains possible.

    Poor snowpack structure exists on shaded aspects where snow that fell has turned weak. The firm slabs that rest two to four feet above this weak, faceted snow are becoming stubborn to triggering but slope failure cannot be ruled out entirely. Continue to look and listen for signs of unstable snow like collapsing or cracking and travel one at a time in avalanche terrain. Above 8,500’, very steep slopes that are peppered by rocks and cliffs are the most likely places to find and trigger a slab.   

    Temperatures will be warm today so be aware of the increased potential for triggering a slide due to this warming. Sunny slopes may become sloppy in the heat of the day.

    Persistent slab avalanches in the adjacent Teton forecast zone around Albright Peak. These slides ran naturally, most likely on December 9th or 10th during an intense loading event.

Avalanche Discussion

The dry conditions which followed storms in November led to the formation of weak faceted snow. Those weak layers were then blanketed by slabs of new and wind-blown snow during several storms starting around the Thanksgiving holiday and ending in early December. Widespread natural and human-triggered avalanche activity resulted from this poor snowpack structure, especially during the most recent stormy period from December 5th-10th. Avalanche danger has declined steadily since that last storm ended as snow gained strength and weak layers adjusted to the new load. No avalanche activity has been reported in this zone or even adjacent zones since December 10th. That being said, observations have been sparse and backcountry use has been minimal. This reduces our confidence in ruling out the potential for human triggering throughout all of the terrain given the poor snowpack structure.
