Weak faceted snow grains around rain crusts are now buried 1 to 3 feet deep. This current Persistent Slab avalanche problem will likely not provide reliable feedback on snowpack instability until an avalanche is triggered. New snow and winds will build slab depths. If you avoid Storm Slabs, described in Problem #2 today, it will also help you avoid the Persistent Slab avalanches. With the unpredictable nature of this problem and potential for larger avalanches, choose simpler lower angle terrain to reduce your risk.
Recent stability tests revealed that facets surround ing different rain crusts are continuing to weaken and producing propagating failures.
