Triggering an avalanche in wind drifted snow is possible today on eastern slopes.  Snow throughout the morning will continue to build these snow drifts which could be large enough to injure a skier.  Look for white, new snow compared to the older, dull bed surface to indicate this hazard and evaluate the new snow as you travel in or below it.

    New snow last night and this morning have created wind slabs on northeast, east, southeast and south facing slopes.  These slabs may be up to 1 foot in thickness and will continue to grow throughout the day.  Slabs will be stubborn to trigger because of the wetted bed surfaces they developed on yesterday and the strong northwest winds that will continue throughout the day.  Hand shear tests will help identify the weak layer within the snowpack as you travel.

Avalanche Discussion

Temperatures have been below freezing from the summit down to Hermit Lake since late yesterday afternoon.  These colder temperatures have locked up much of the wet snow that fell yesterday morning.  New, lighter density snow that fell overnight and this morning was transported on northwest winds which promoted the development of wind slabs on eastern aspects for today.  Scattered snow showers throughout the day will continue to add to this avalanche problem.  

When traveling in the terrain today, assess the snowpack regularly.  Hand shear tests may be helpful in finding weak layers and will allow you to assess the depth of new snow.  Snow that is above your boot top in depth will indicate the avalanche problem in the terrain.

  • The John Sherburne Ski Trail is closed ½ way down from the top at the fifth cut-over.  Please cross over to the Tuckerman Ravine trail at the yellow rope and walk down the hiking trail.
  • The Harvard Cabin is closed for the season.
  • The Lion Head Summer Trail remains closed for the season due to avalanche risk. The Lion Head Winter Route is open.
