Kernpunkte

On Wednesday, we'll be transitioning from our stormier avalanche problems to those instabilities that we associate with melting snow.  At the highest elevations, avalanches will remain possible in wind blown pockets of snow.  Warm temperatures and periods of sunshine will melt the snow on sunnier slopes and could cause Wet Loose avalanches.  Consider how the sun will impact different aspects to find the best and safe riding conditions.

The extent of Wet Loose avalanche activity will depend largely on how much sun we see on Wednesday.  Weather forecasts are calling for partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Likely the sunniest slopes will see Wet Loose avalanches at all elevations.  Wet Loose avalanches could be large if surface melting extends into previously saturated snow from Sunday's rain.  If you are sinking into deep slushy snow, it's probably time to avoid steep slopes, and consider finding better riding on cooler slopes that get less sun.

Wind Slab avalanches are most likely to occur on North and East slopes at the highest elevations.  These higher elevations likely received more and drier snow during the early part of this week.  Evaluate the depth and stability of new snow on these slopes before committing to bigger or steeper terrain.

During the last few days at Tam Rim, I've seen a lot of blowing snow near treeline, but not much in the way of Wind Slab activity (I was avoiding the most potentially dangerous slopes).  There were reports of shallow Wind Slabs elsewhere in the range.

Give cornices a wide berth during this part of the year when they are continually weakening and sometimes growing during periods of storm.  All the bigger ones will fall down at some point.
