Kernpunkte

Triggering a large avalanche 2-3 feet deep is possible today on very steep slopes. The danger is greatest in shady terrain above 8000 feet where weak, sugary snow remains preserved and buried.  Small avalanches on steep, upper elevation slopes exposed to the wind are also possible. Evaluate terrain carefully and use caution around wind-affected slopes. Identify terrain traps where even small avalanches could bury you.

    Weak, sugary facets formed in January are buried 2-3 feet in many locations. These facets are best preserved on steep, shady, northerly slopes. The likelihood of triggering a large avalanche continues to decrease as the snowpack adjusts, but it remains possible. Warning signs will most likely not be present until it’s too late. Consider the consequences of an avalanche before committing to steep terrain. There are many narrow gullies and terrain traps on Togwotee Pass where even a small avalanche can bury you.

    Avalanche near Split Rock. This avalanche was on the smaller side, but if piled up in a creek of depression (terrain trap), it could have still buried a rider.

    Up to 8” of snow fell on Togwotee Pass in the last few days. Strong southwest and westerly winds have built shallow slabs on leeward aspects. A few more inches of snow are expected today, with gusts to 50 mph. Slabs will most likely be small and less than a foot thick, but could be reactive to the weight of a single rider. Small wind slab avalanches could easily knock you over above consequential terrain. Look for drifting snow and shooting cracks around ridgelines and rocky outcrops.

Avalanche Discussion

The persistent slab problem on Togwotee continues to slowly heal. Warm temperatures and only several inches (not much loading) of snow in the past couple of days have helped. Even though it has felt like spring recently, weak snow remains buried and well-preserved. In some locations, stability tests are showing stronger results. However, triggering an avalanche is still possible on very steep, shady, northerly facing slopes. Dig down and look for weak sugary snow and consider the consequences if the slope were to avalanche. Is it a small slope with a mellow runout, or would it strain you through the trees or dump into a narrow creekbed? On steep, north-facing consequential terrain, consider lower-angle riding.
