Kernpunkte

Warm temperatures may produce another round of wet loose avalanches. You may find these wet loose slides on shadier slopes since freezing levels will climb to near ridgetop. Move to lower angle slopes if you observe rollerballs iniating or see fresh wet avalanches.

    The question mark for tomorrow will be wind speeds. If wind speeds crank, it may limit wet loose avalanches. However,  if winds hold off, freezing levels will still be on the rise and climbing to ridgetop level. So,  this may create another round of wet loose avalanches and on atypical aspects. Don’t be surprised if you find these wet loose slides on more shaded slopes due to warm temperatures.  If you start observing rollerballs or pinwheels, think about moving to lower angle terrain. 

     

Avalanche Discussion

I traveled into the Ahtanum Meadows area on Wednesday and observed 10-12 inches of new storm snow from the evening of 2/7. We generally found a favorable upper snowpack structure and minimal signs of instability as we traveled. Near ridgetop we did observe signs of recent wind-loading, however, these slabs appeared stubborn on test slopes.

The MLK crust remains a prominent marker in the upper snowpack. Generally we found this layer to be 1-2’ below the snow surface. We still found some weak snow associated with the crust, however, this layer did not show the ability to propagate in snowpack tests in the location we were.  Unsurprisingly, we found the weakest snow (rounding facets) on shaded aspects (NW-N NE) above 6500 ft. Overall, we found great riding conditions and a fairly strong upper snowpack. You can check out our full observation here. 

Big changes are on the horizon with an incoming cold front arriving Monday. On Sunday look for increasing clouds and ridgetop winds. Any precipitation should hold off until the late evening hours. On Monday, expect a good uptick in avalanche danger. Check back for the latest information.
