    Another day of hot temperatures and sunny skies brings the possibility of small, wet loose avalanches to areas with recently drifted snow. Expect any surface crust to soften quickly and for the likelihood to increase. Over the past couple of days, observers have found these avalanches to become possible after 11 am on steep, sunny terrain. Places that received the most new snow in last week's storm (Virginia Lakes, Tioga Pass, Mammoth Area, and near the Sierra Crest) are the most likely places to encounter wet loose avalanches. Fresh avalanche activity and roller balls or pinwheels are direct signs of instability. Reduce your exposure to steep terrain with slushy snow at the surface. Move off recent drifts and onto old surfaces as the recently wind-drifted snow transitions to wet and unsupportable.

Mountain travelers have been finding variable, but generally cold, good-quality snow on high northerly aspects. As you move around the compass, sunny slopes have been softening quickly. With daytime highs today similar to the last couple of days, expect rapidly softening melt-freeze crusts on sunny slopes and firm, supportable travel on high-elevation, shady aspects. It's worth bringing sharps, like ski or boot crampons, to help manage firm surfaces, especially early in the morning.

The majority of our ammunition for wet loose avalanches has been settling into smaller and smaller amounts with each warm day. Yet it remains easy to find pockets of recently drifted snow on steep, sunny slopes that become reactive as the surface transitions from a melt-freeze crust to a wet state. These drifts are considered isolated within specific terrain and are more consistently distributed to the northern half of the compass. If you're encountering smooth, drifted pockets of last week's snow that are becoming wet, simply move on to old, scoured surfaces or more gentle terrain.

Springtime is here, the days are long, and it is a wonderful time to get out. Consider spring hazards such as open water and creek crossings, patchy coverage, and potential rockfalls or cornice failures when planning your trip. With continued warm daytime highs, it's a good idea to keep a watchful eye on extreme terrain above you during your ingress and egress. Expect rapidly changing conditions throughout your day.
