Snowpack

In the north, the foehn wind transported some old snow on north-facing slopes during the night to Saturday. Mostly thin, hard snowdrift accumulations developed locally.

In southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons, the snowpack is weak with many soft layers of faceted crystals. The snowpack structure is most unfavourable in the Engadine and the neighbouring southern valleys of Grisons. In the west and north, there are still isolated weak layers in the upper part of the snowpack. Stability tests still show some fractures, but hardly any avalanches have been triggered by people in recent days.

Owing to warmer temperatures, north-facing slopes have also been moistened up to around 2200 m. Particularly on eastern, southern and western slopes, there has been an increase in gliding avalanches in recent days, including large ones in the west. As a consequence of falling temperatures, gliding snow activity will gradually decrease again.

It will be very cloudy with slight snowfall above approximately 1500 m. In the east it will remain largely dry with foehn-like bright spells. There will be sometimes strong southwesterly winds in the Jura and on the western part of the northern flank of the Alps, otherwise a moderate southerly wind.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase slightly in the far west, otherwise it will not change significantly. There will continue to be a possibility of gliding avalanches.

Wednesday

At first it will be very cloudy with precipitation. The snowfall level will drop from 1300 to 800 m. As the day progresses, there will be bright spells in Valais and Ticino. During the night, there will be strong to stormy westerly winds on the northern flank of the Alps, during the day moderate to strong northerly winds in the south.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase slightly across the board. The danger of gliding avalanches will decrease further.
