Avalanche Activity

Some fresh snow and the wind slabs represent the main danger.

The sometimes strong wind will transport the snow. The wind slabs are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls and generally at high altitudes. They can be released in some cases above approximately 2300 m, caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions 5 to 10 cm of snow, but less in some localities, fell in the last five days. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. At higher altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In all regions below approximately 2000 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.

Tendency

Slight increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of the sometimes strong northerly wind.
