Mt Hood

Expect generally safe avalanche conditions and variable snow surfaces on Tuesday.  Have a plan before committing to steep slopes where you find firm and icy conditions.  Snow surfaces will soften more quickly for sunny lower elevations and terrain not exposed to easterly winds.  

It should be another cool day on the upper mountain with strong E-NE winds.  Mid and lower elevation temperatures should warm slightly on Tuesday under mostly sunny skies.  

Extreme winds on Saturday did a number on snow surface with sastrugi, exposed ridgelines and dusty snow easy to find.  The 1-2" of new snow did not cause much in the way of new avalanches for what was primarily a wind event on the mountain.   Wind-affected snow is everywhere near and above treeline but wind slabs are considered unreactive. If traveling into the alpine and above NWAC's forecast rating, take the time to evaluate the snowpack yourself.  Cornices are not particularly large given what they can be for this time of year.  If you find large overhanging cornices, give them space along ridgelines and on slopes below.  At lower elevations, use caution in very steep terrain features where you find wet snow and may trigger a wet loose avalanche.  Take care navigating snow bridges over streams as they start to melt and weaken throughout the spring.
