Avalanche Activity

Weak layers in the old snowpack represent the main danger.

Avalanches can be released in the old snowpack. In isolated cases they are medium-sized and can be released by a single winter sport participant. Caution is to be exercised in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2300 m, and on wind-loaded slopes. The wind slabs are mostly small. Slight increase in danger of moist snow slides as a consequence of warming. The numerous rocks hidden by the recent snow are the main danger.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 5 to 10 cm of snow has fallen since Wednesday above approximately 1500 m. The weather conditions gave rise to slight moistening of the snowpack in all aspects below approximately 2000 m. Weak layers exist in the centre of the snowpack. The wind slabs have bonded generally well with the old snowpack. At intermediate and high altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

As a consequence of new snow and wind the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase on Sunday. Gradual increase in avalanche danger.
