Warming temperatures today will steadily increase the likelihood of wet loose avalanches through this afternoon. These heavy, wet sluffs can easily push you towards hazards down slope and could bury a person in a pronounced terrain trap. You can manage this avalanche problem by staying off and not lingering below steep slopes anywhere the snow is not refrozen.

    Wet loose avalanches of varying size may become likely for you to initiate on steep slopes and possible to release naturally. Expect increasing instability through the warmest time of day for this warming-driven avalanche problem. Though typically of most concern on sun exposed terrain, cloud cover today may produce more uniform warming on all aspects. Loose wet avalanches tend to occur on terrain nearing 40 degrees or steeper in slope angle. You can avoid them by staying off this steep terrain anywhere you find a moist, sloppy snow surface.

Avalanche Discussion

A warm week with nights both above and below freezing continues to affect our upper snowpack and bring stability to the persistent slab problem of last week. Overnight temperatures dipped just below freezing at higher elevations last night, where you should find a refrozen snow surface this morning. Expect daytime highs today approaching 45F to soften that crust on many aspects. South aspects have the most supportable crust and might briefly offer the nicest riding conditions as it starts to soften. You can easily manage our wet loose avalanche problem by avoiding steep and especially high consequence, “extreme” terrain as the snow warms and becomes sloppy. Timing is everything for both minimizing hazard and maximizing enjoyment on a spring snowpack. Also realize that warmer areas like our lower elevations might start the day with wet avalanche problems. Enjoy the warm weather and keep your avalanche brain engaged, plenty of snow remains in the mountains!
