    Today will be the warmest day of the week thus far. While temps did not get below freezing in many places, clear skies helped produce a modest refreeze. Direct solar radiation and rapidly rising temps will warm the snow early in the day, and the potential for wet loose instabilities will increase. Increasing cloud cover later in the day may further contribute to warming via a greenhouse effect, and could especially affect northerly slopes that have yet to transition.  Wet, sticky snow, increasing boot penetration, rollerballs, and recent avalanche activity are all signs that indicate wet loose avalanches are becoming more likely. Areas near radiators, such as rock features and cliff bands, are especially susceptible to increased warming and are often areas where these avalanches can be triggered. To minimize your exposure today, leave room in your plan to be off and out from underneath steep slopes before the surface snow gets too wet.

Yesterday we observed lots of rollerball activity and a handful of small wet loose avalanches in the central region of our forecast zone. A D2 was reported near the crest, in the Mammoth area, possibly initiated by a cornice fall. Multiple wet loose slides were observed in the southern region of our zone as well. We are not quite in a spring diurnal cycle. Some areas with thinner snow coverage have developed corn-like surfaces, while others are still transitioning. Generally, the upper snowpack has been warming quickly with the top 25 cm getting wet. The exception seems to be areas protected by terrain features and at the highest elevations. With increasing cloud coverage this afternoon, and a small chance of precipitation, these slopes may begin to transition as well, and may be susceptible to wet loose instabilities for the first time during this warm up. 

We have yet to see widespread cornice failures, but isolated events have been reported. Always give cornices a wide berth from above and below, and consider that cornice failure is a natural trigger to any instabilities on a slope below.
