Today, strong April sunshine combined with light winds will fuel a significant warm-up. As the snowpack heats up, it will create surface instability from wet snow. If you start to see roller balls or deep slushy snow, it's time to move to low angle terrain or a shaded slope.

    April is feeling a little more like spring after a wintry start to the month. This weekend we are receiving our first substantial warming trend and much of the new snow that fell on April 1 &2 will be effected by the warming temperatures. As the surface snow warms, you can cue in on signs of instability, such as roller balls and pinwheels or snow becoming deep and slushy under your sled or skis.  If you see these signs, it is time to change your plans. Find a shaded slope or low angle terrain to mitigate your risk to avalanches. Even a small wet loose avalanche can have big consequences if a terrain trap is involved. 

     

    Travel carefully in areas around exposed rocks or cliffs, they can absorb heat and impact the snow quicker than any snow covered slope. Use time of day to your advantage. As the day heats up, you can follow aspect and elevation bands to reduce your exposure to surface instability.

Avalanche Discussion

On April 1 we had 2–3 feet of new snow fall from the last winter storm. Temperatures have stayed cold and soft snow has remained in the majority of our higher elevation terrain.  Post storm, we have seen shifting wind directions and some blowing snow on ridgelines. Be aware that lingering wind slabs may exist in isolated terrain features. Small wind slabs can have big consequences when we venture into complex terrain. Watch for pockets of wind affected snow as they may still harbor some instability.

A Few Notes:

  • Forecasting Season nears an end for us here at the BAC. The final Forecast for the seaason  will be issued on Sunday, April 13th with a spring statement published on Friday the 18th.
  • The BWRA will close to motorized use when there is less than 2ft of snow at the Leavitt Lake road / Highway108 junction OR the last Sunday in April (27th). Whichever comes first.
  • As spring arrives to our area parking can become difficult as snowlines move up and Cal Trans or the county begin clearing roads, where ever you choose to park please do so respectfully and out of the way of others.
  • As always, please submit your observations. Forecasters can't be everywhere in one day, but providing observations helps us write a more accurate forecast for you!
