As snow accumulates, small human-triggered avalanches will become possible to trigger in drifted areas above treeline. If traveling in the alpine, evaluate wind loaded features for signs of instability like shooting cracks. Come equipped to arrest a fall if traveling on steep slopes.

    A couple inches of new snow through the day combined with light to moderate southwest winds may create small pockets of wind slabs in the alpine. Watch for signs of blowing snow and where it is headed. Wind slabs commonly form below leeward ridgelines, around rock outcroppings, and in gully features and may appear lens, pillow, or dune shaped. Evaluate slopes for signs instability before committing to steep terrain. If you see signs of unstable snow like recent avalanches, cracking, or blocking, consider moving to lower angle slopes, more sheltered terrain, or around the drifted area. In extreme terrain and with firm bed surfaces, even small avalanches can have serious consequences.

Avalanche Discussion

The concern for wet loose avalanches will continue to decrease as temperatures cool over the next couple of days. That said, small, isolated wet snow instabilities may persist today in extreme terrain near rock outcrops where surfaces are weaker from multiple nights without a refreeze and overnight cloud coverage. If you observe greasy snow atop a firm crust or sink into wet snow past your ankles, seek gentler or more supportable terrain.  

The first storm event since early March will provide a welcome change to the prolonged period of abnormally warm, dry weather as well as a much-needed refresh. If you’re headed into the backcountry today, come prepared for variable snow surfaces and weather. As snow totals increase over the next couple days, hazards from buried obstacles will become more of an issue in lower elevation areas.

Recent snow survey data from the Eddy mountains highlight the below-average snow depths from persistently high snow levels this winter and periods of unseasonably warm weather. The full observation can be read here. On Mount Shasta, snow depths measure about 50 inches at the Old Ski Bowl (7,600 feet).
