On Sunday, triggering avalanches in wind drifted snow will be likely. In the trees and wind-protected areas, triggering avalanches in new storm snow will be possible. Avalanche danger will increase as more new snow stacks up throughout the day. Avoid open terrain that is steeper than 30 degrees if you see the wind blowing snow onto the slope. Also, pay close attention to new snow that's piling up, and if it gets deeper than your boot tops, be extra conservative in your travel choices. If you're unsure about snow stability, stick to low angle terrain.

    By Sunday afternoon, we could receive up to a foot or more of new snow, accompanied by moderate to strong winds from the west and southwest. Wind deposits can hold 3-5 times the accumulation that falls from the sky, which means that wind slabs capable of creating large avalanches will be likely on lee slopes in open terrain. In areas with strong winds, such as ridge tops near treeline elevations and in the alpine, strong winds could result in wind slab formation lower on slopes or in unexpected areas. 

    Avoid steep terrain where you see the wind transporting snow onto the slope below. Monitor this problem by probing wind drifts with your pole to check the depth of wind deposits, and look for rippled texture on the snow surface, or snow that feels smooth, firm and hollow. Use extra caution around ridge tops and newly formed cornices that will be fragile and easy to break. If you see signs of instability, move to wind-sheltered terrain in the trees or slopes that are less than 30 degrees. Remember, areas of burned forest don't offer the same wind protection as typical tree coverage.

    As new snow stacks up, the storm slab avalanche problem will increase. The higher end of forecasted snow totals calls for 16 inches at mid-elevations by late Sunday afternoon. However, 8 inches or more can be enough snow for storm slab avalanches. 

    The storm slab problem will depend on how much new snow we receive. Keep track of how much new snow is stacking up, and look for this problem anywhere that the wind hasn't stripped away the snow (for example, in the trees). Use techniques like hand shears or the shovel tilt test to look for instabilities within the new snow, or at the interface of the newer and older snow. Be more conservative as the snow piles up, and avoid trigger points like convex rolls, as well as terrain traps like gullies and tight trees. If you're uncertain, back off the slope angle to less than 30 degrees.
