Kernpunkte

Wind Slab avalanches will remain possible near treeline and in the alpine.  Wind Slab avalanches may run the gammut from deep and stubborn on East slopes, to small and reactive on West slopes.  If you are traveling near treeline or on alpine slopes use conservative terrain (smaller slopes, less steep slopes and slopes that are well supported) to evaluate where the wind has blown the snow to before committing to bigger, steeper terrain.

    Wind Slabs that developed on East and North slopes during Monday's snowfall are becoming more stubborn.

    The wind shifted to the East on Tuesday and was redistributing snow onto West slopes at upper elevations.

    It'll be a bit tricky to evaluate the wind slab problem on Wednesday.  Your best bet is to spend time on smaller or less steep slopes to observe recent wind loading before committing to bigger terrain.  You can look for shallow wind slabs with hand shears and by watching for cracking in the surface snow.  Deeper wind slabs can be evaluated by "pole probing" (feeling for weak snow with your ski pole, often flipped upside down) as well as with compression tests in wind loaded terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Monday's storm left us with 20-25 cm of new snow.  Sunnier slopes near treeline likely experienced some melting on Tuesday.  North facing, sheltered slopes may hold surface hoar and near surface facets.  Moderate East winds were moving snow near treeline and above.  All recent avalanche activity has been limited to Wind Slab activity related to the most recent storm snow.
