Avalanche Activity

GC19/2 Wet and mild wet snow instabilities in sheltered gullies+N-E slopes 1000m+ cornices prone to collapse hazard moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Rain through the day at all levels will saturate the snowpack reducing any recent superficial accumulations. Wet snow instabilities will exist on the steepest slopes, in particular sheltered gullies and slopes with a North-Westerly through North to Easterly aspect mainly above 1000 metres. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Cool and dry conditions overnight with a brief period of snow/sleet affecting higher slopes mainly above 1000 metres. It will then become progressively milder with rain at all levels as the day progresses. Freezing level 900 metres in the morning rising to 2500 metres by evening. Rain will be heavy at times. Winds will be generally South-Westerly strong to gale increasing through the day. Observed Weather Influences: New snow and strong Southerly winds overnight affected slopes above 600 metres. The freezing level rose above the summits briefly this morning with some very light drizzle affecting all levels. ObservedSnowStability: The old snowpack which mainly exists in the higher Northern and Easterly corries is generally stable. New snow which fell overnight has formed surface instabilities in sheltered gullies and on North-West to North-Easterly aspects mainly above 1000 metres. Some of these areas are affected by fragile cornices. The avalanche hazard is Low.
