At the mid and upper elevations surface slabs to eighteen inches deep could be triggered by people who venture into steep avalanche starting zones, couloirs and cliff areas. The potential to trigger these slabs will increase as the day warms. Some wet-loose natural and human triggered surface slides should be expected in the heat of the day on steep, sunny slopes. In areas with a thinner snowpack, the warm-up could reintroduce the potential for people, especially those on snowmachines, to trigger dangerous full depth, hard-slab avalanches. Avalanches are unlikely at the lower elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

Clouds will lower overnight and light snow is expected to begin by early morning Wednesday with 2 to 4 inches of accumulation expected in the mountains by afternoon. As temperatures increase there is a chance of rain below 7000 feet in the afternoon. Winds on exposed ridges will be southwesterly at 15 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard will be Moderate in the Tetons where the possibility remains for backcountry users to trigger isolated slabs to 18 inches in depth on steep slopes and chutes on northerly aspects at Mid and Upper elevations. The general avalanche hazard will be Moderate in the Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass area. The possibility exists for people, particularly snow machiners, to trigger full depth, hard-slab avalanches on steep, northerly aspects.The general avalanche hazard in the Southwest Trails/Greys River region will be Moderate. Backcountry travelers could release surface slabs to 18 inches in depth on northeast to northwest aspects. There remains the possibility for users, particularly snow machiners, to trigger full depth slides on similar slopes. Sustained rain at lower elevations may produce surface sloughs in steep areas like road cuts or roof tops.
