Avalanche Activity

Still cold at 2000 m

Avalanche danger above 1900 m is moderate, danger is low below that altitude. New danger zones are expected in NE-SE aspects. Storm winds are transporting the at high altitudes, depositing it distant from ridgelines, behind abrupt discontinuities in the terrain. Fresh drifts are brittle and easily triggered even be minimum additional loading. Since the snowpack fundament is stable, only the drifts can trigger, thus, maximum magnitude 2 releases.

Snowpack Structure

With the mass of cold air the snowpack surface is stabilizing, a melt-freeze crust is forming. Storm winds are transporting snow, depositing it atop this crust. Weak layers exist inside the snowpack; also the bonding to the fresh snowdrifts with the old snowpack is insufficient.

Weather Synopsis

The summits of Northern Alps and Niedere Tauern will be shrouded in dense cloud in the morning, starting at midday in Dachstein-Tauern region, like snowfall, the snowfall level rising to nearly 1000 m. The snowfall will extend by evening along the northern flank of the Alps, winds will be brisk from NW. At 2000 m: -5 degrees.

Tendency

On Monday the summits of Styria’s mountains will be veiled in heavy cloud, intermittent sunshine, even moments of cloudless skies. Winds will shift to westerly, brisk in ridgeline terrain and on the peaks. Much milder at all altitudes. At 2000 m: +6 degrees. Caution: daytime danger cycle for avalanches.
