Avalanche Activity

Rising avalanche danger during the course of the day

Avalanche danger is moderate. Main problem: fresh fallen snow from the last few days, which can trigger naturally as a loose-snow avalanche, esp. on very steep slopes in all aspects, or be triggered by 1 skier. Wind-bonded snow can be triggered by 1 person. Loose-snow avalanches are usually small, slab avalanches can be medium-sized. During the course of the day, sunny slopes become increasingly moist-to-wet, releasing loose-snow avalanches naturally, or by 1 person’s additional loading, esp. on steep slopes. In addition, gliding snow can be problematic. On very steep grass-covered slopes in all aspects, glide-snow avalanches can releases naturally, esp. where the slopes were bare of snow before the precipitation, medium sized releases possible. Glide cracks are signals of imminent danger.

Snowpack Structure

The snow is settling with rising temperatures and becoming rapidly moist on sunny slopes, losing its bonding and releasing loose-snow avalanches. In summit and ridgeline terrain the snow is bonded like a slab due to gusty winds, can be prone to triggering. No marked weak layers are evident, making wide-ranging fracture propagation unlikely. At the base, it is wet on warm ground, reinforcing gliding movements over smooth ground.
